The Latest Trends in Nonprofit Fundraising, Uncovered

“Does this sound like my organization?”

That’s the first question you should ask yourself when reading the 2016 Individual Donor Benchmark Data Brief (this year, as an easy-to-read infographic). From there, you can evaluate your donor potential, enhance your strategy, and raise more money from individual donors!

Presented by Third Space Studio and BC/DC Ideas, the Individual Donor Benchmark (IDB) Project collects fundraising data from organizations with budgets under $2 million, seeking to identify trends nonprofits can use to evaluate their own fundraising success. In this, our fifth year, we surveyed over 150 nonprofits to find answers to questions like:

  • What percentage of your annual revenue came from individual donors?
  • What was your donor retention rate?
  • What percentage of your board members engaged in significant fundraising activities this year?

Our learnings provide a roadmap for you to set new goals and implement creative tactics—perhaps to raise the bar for your team and meet the national averages, or to surpass them!

Key comparisons from 2015 to 2016
A few highly relevant data points stayed the same over the past two surveys (or longer), even though the organizations who participated in the survey changed! To give you a sneak peek: revenue from individuals in 2016 totaled 36% of the average organization’s overall revenue, as compared to 34% in 2015 and 36% in 2014.

A bright and shiny new Data Brief!
That’s right, we distilled this year’s most important findings into two striking pages you can easily share with your team and board members.

Our biggest response rate yet
155 organizations ranging from $200,000 to $2 million in revenues filled our survey pool this year. The more responses our survey receives, the stronger the data you receive!
